Alida is a Brooklyn-based mechanical engineer, designer, and educator, dedicated to addressing social and environmental issues through sustainable design and manufacturing. They specialize in design for manufacturing and are well-versed in fabrication processes for wood, metals, plastics, and textiles. Their personal creative practice focuses on custom textile design, where they explore gender fluidity and non-conformity in clothing.
Alida received a B.S. in Sustainable Design Engineering and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. Throughout their Master’s program, they worked as a Course Assistant for the Stanford Product Realization Lab, where they taught hundreds of students the various fabrication processes available and provided individual coaching for students’ projects. They have carried this work forward through their current role as the Instructor for Design & Engineering at the Brooklyn STEAM Center, where they teach 11th- and 12th-grade students.
Alida was born and raised on the 21-square-mile island of Bermuda. Their perspective as an engineer stems largely from their upbringing on the island, where for centuries Bermudians have learned to innovate with few resources, survive in the face of natural disasters, overcome colonial legacies, and cherish essential ecosystems.
Alida is committed to social change and environmental justice and is seeking collaboration on projects that challenge consumerism. If you are interested in collaborating, get in touch.
