Alida is a Brooklyn-based mechanical engineer, designer, and educator, dedicated to addressing social and environmental issues through sustainable design and manufacturing. They specialize in mechanical design and are well-versed in fabrication processes for wood, metals, plastics, and textiles. Alida has worked with design-focused brands to develop products from concept to production, designing functional, manufacturable products that create delightful user experiences while reducing environmental impact. Their personal creative practice focuses on custom textile design, where they explore gender fluidity and non-conformity in clothing.
Alida earned a B.S. in Sustainable Design Engineering and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. Throughout their Master’s program, they worked as a Course Assistant for the Stanford Product Realization Lab, where they taught hundreds of students the various fabrication processes available and provided individual coaching for students’ projects. They carried this work forward through their role as the Instructor for Design & Engineering at the Brooklyn STEAM Center, where they taught hands-on project-based learning to 11th- and 12th-grade students.
Alida was born and raised on the 21-square-mile island of Bermuda. Their perspective as an engineer stems largely from their upbringing on the island, where for centuries Bermudians have learned to innovate with few resources, survive in the face of natural disasters, overcome colonial legacies, and cherish essential ecosystems.
